Victoria Market 2019-2023
This project documents the ending chapter of a historical indoor market in Nottingham and captures the loss of community felt by both the market traders and customers. Victoria Market has existed in various formats but can be traced back to the 1100s when it occupied the central square (Nottingham Markets, 2022). Currently, the market is located within a private shopping mall, which is squeezing out valuable retail space (Locker, 2023). The local council publicly owns Victoria Market and has faced vast budget cuts over the last 15 years (Pawson and Deeming, 2019). The closure of the market becomes inevitable, ultimately leading to the displacement of market traders and the loss of a community space. This illustrates the division between the private and public sector within retail (Jones & Kirk, 2015). The images were taken during a period of instability, as the traders faced the potential closure of the market. Consequently, they evoke a palpable sense of melancholy (Pridmore, 2023).
